Gosset

House · Épernay · founded 1584 (as a wine house)

Gosset is a Champagne house in Épernay that dates its founding to 1584, when Pierre Gosset began trading still wines, mostly red, in Aÿ.1 The date refers to a wine business, not to sparkling champagne, which did not yet exist.1

History

According to the house, Pierre Gosset, lord and alderman of Aÿ, set up a wine business in 1584 and made mostly red still wines from his own vineyards. The house calls itself the oldest wine house in Champagne.1 The claim is about a wine trade; sparkling champagne came much later (see timeline).

In 1760 Jean Gosset first used the old-style bottle shape that the house still uses as its emblem.1 Towards the end of 1993 Gosset joined the family-owned Renaud-Cointreau group.1 Odilon de Varine has been head winemaker since 2006, and since 2009 the house has been based in Épernay.1

Ownership

The Union des Maisons de Champagne lists the group as Iconics Nectars, Renaud Cointreau, a staff of 32 and no published vineyard area.2

Wines

The house names the Celebris range (vintage, rosé and blanc de blancs), Grand Millésime, and two wines labelled by minimum time in the cellar: 12 ans de cave a minima Rosé and 21 ans de cave a minima.1 See ageing on lees and vintage.
